About this course

The Power Cross: understanding and navigating power dynamics

The Power Cross is designed to help you recognise and navigate power dynamics, particularly the balance between equal and hierarchical interactions. It teaches you how to manage tensions and reconcile opposites. With extensive illustrations and practical exercises, this course bridges theory and real-life application—helping you develop a balanced approach to influence, power, and leadership.

Influence, power, and leadership

Do you want to learn how to exercise influence effectively, use power responsibly, and apply ethical leadership? This online course on influence, power, and leadership provides in-depth insights into the fundamental principles of human interaction, offering practical tools and inspirational film examples.

What will you learn in this course on power and influence?

This course focuses on two essential dimensions of social interaction: horizontal collaboration and vertical power. These structures are central to how we perceive, act, and communicate. Whether you're a leader, team player, or an individual aiming for more effective collaboration, this programme equips you with leadership skills that create impact.

Horizontal and vertical structures: the foundations of social interaction

Horizontal interactions emphasise equality, mutual respect, and cooperation. Vertical interactions involve top-down leadership (guidance from authority) and bottom-up agency (challenging authority when necessary). These tensions exist everywhere—in our bodies, personal relationships, organisations, society and geopolitics.

The Power Cross: a model for balanced influence and leadership

The Power Cross provides a framework for understanding how horizontal and vertical behaviours intersect. You will learn to:

 - Combine soft influence with strong decision-making.

 - Balance top-down leadership with justice and bottom-up engagement.

 - Foster effective teamwork in horizontal structures.

 - Integrate collaboration with personal courage to stand up for your principles.

Practical tools and inspiring film clips

This course blends theory with practice through exercises and powerful film clips, allowing you to immediately apply what you learn to your personal and professional life. This approach deepens your understanding and enhances your ability to influence and lead responsibly.

These cardinal virtues have appeared since ancient times, both in China and in classical Greece. They can be seen as the cardinal directions of our moral compass, the four essential ingredients for integrity. The word 'cardinal' originates from the Latin word 'cardo' (plural: 'cardines'), which means 'hinge' or 'axis.' You could say that these four virtues form the axis around which everything revolves. Or, in terms of the Double Healix Power Cross: it is the interplay between the four virtues on the horizontal and vertical axes around which everything revolves. Show More

If you want to have more influence in your environment or the world, it is worthwhile to expand your reach within the Power Cross. This reach is determined by a set of universal skills that every person can develop to some extent. In the next chapters, we will explore various paradoxical reconciliations that you can achieve if you learn to effectively navigate the poles of these tensions.
